Chemises have a long and intriguing history of evolution. Despite several transformations and influences of different eras, the chemises have remained true to their beginnings , designs and purposes.
The word ‘chemises’ is plural for ‘chemise’ which is a French word! It simply means a shirt. The term exists in quite a few other languages, as camicia in Italian, camisa in Spanish and kameez in Hindi and Urdu. The 1st chemises were designed during the medieval times. It was conceptualized such as an undergarment which could be worn on bare skin upon which ladies would put on the corsets or any dresses. The main objective of chemises was to prevent the dresses being spoilt caused by body sweat or any oils that were normally used by women back then. Dresses were not washed every day at that time therefore they had to be kept clean. Neither were there any dry cleaners nor as many dresses as we have currently which made the chemises a much required apparel. It was one of the first undergarments that had been used far and wide, from the west to the east, albeit with subtle variances in the design. As chemises in the Elizabethan times were purely innerwear or lingerie, its variants were more elaborate and exuberant in the then colonies in Asia as a formal wear.
Current day chemises are nonetheless a lot completely different from what have been around back then. Chemises today are more of a attractive innerwear than much needed apparel. Albeit, they're still more utilitarian than virtually all lingerie objects but the variety available currently is more designed for visuals than efficacies.
Chemises of modern times are simple loosely fitted sleeveless shirts with very thin strips that hang the piece of cloth or fabric on the shoulders. Normally, chemises have a smaller size and form than that of babydolls. Chemises commonly end at the hip levels.
These days, the popularity of chemises could be categorized into numerous preferences. Some think it to be much neccessary lingerie but without the absolute necessity of it being employed as innerwear as others employ it as nightwear. Chemises have been around in various styles for males as well as females. The conventional chemises for males are still around with some modifications.
Chemises as lingerie these days are getting cooler, more fashionable and unique. various materials are being experimented with and so are various designs.
